30 Dec 10 NBA Eastern Conference Playoff Threats

Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesWe know about the Cavaliers. We know about the Magic. We know about the Hawks. We know about the Celtics, the top 4 playoff teams.but thebottom 4 teams in the Playoff picture... Milwaukee Bucks 41-336. Miami Heat 41-347. Charlotte Bobcats 39-358. Toronto Raptors 37-37These teams aren't as established, nor have they been consistent all season, but yet.. It is the playoffs, and that usually brings out the Minnesota Vikings
best of teams, (remember the Bulls and Derrick Rose taking the Celtics to game 7 last year?)So what I want to know is, who out of the bottom 4 teams has the best chance to advance to the 2nd round and beyond in the 09-10 playoffs? The Bucks, they're a nice story, being lead by outstanding rookie point guard Brandon Jennings, the unexpected great play of Ersan Ilyasova, the consistent rebounding, blocked shots, and scoring of Andrew Bogut, Not to mention the BIG move in trading for John Salmons. The Bucks in my opinion are the 2nd best turn around team this year, second only to the OKC Thunder, They already have 2 wins over Boston and 1 win over the Cavaliers, pretty good resum heading into April. The Heat, What can I say, they started out bad and they're finishing strong, currently riding a 6 game win streak. They have a top 5 player in the NBA and no.2 in the EFF%, his name? DWYANE WADE! With D-Wade you have a chance to do almost anything, remember what they did to Dallas? Yup, anythings possible for this New England Patriots jersey
team. The Bobcats, Hm... Gerald Wallace is an all star, Michael Jordan owns the team. Yet.. I'm not entirely sure that this team is mature enough to step up to the next level. Theo Ratliff's still getting it done dispite his age, and Stephen Jackson's been stepping up at the right times all season long. But would that be enough for them to defeat, say, Orlando in the first round? I doubt it, but you know MJ's got some great pep talks! The Raptors!they haven't solidified the 8 spot, just 2games ahead of theBulls.Oh my, they had me fooled in december that they were a good team, and now they've just dropped and slowed down more and more, day by day. The problem is, nobody knows why they are not getting it done on the court, Chris Bosh's had a great season, all star in dallas, averaging 24 pts and 11 rebounds a game. Jarrett Jack's shooting a solid 40% from 3pt land. Bargnani's been a disappointment for me, not "living up to the hype" but if this team gets rolling in these last few games, who knows... As long as they don't face Cleveland in New Orleans Saints jersey
the first roundSo, Who do you guys think can make a run and why? Can anybody beat Cleveland until the conference finals? Who's your favorite 5-8 seed in the playoffs? leave your comments, questions, corrections, and opinions! Thank you for reading!

29 Dec 10 Pistons Season Over! Fans Heckle and Criticize Far too Much!

Where have the true Pistons fans gone?It seems after a disappointing 27-55 season, fans have turned on the Pistons. "Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon were a horrible pickup, they suck," "Tayshaun Prince needs to be traded," "Rip Hamilton is no longer in his prime and needs to be traded,"and Reebok New York Giants #27 Brandon Jacobs Realtree camo Jersey
most recently: "Fire Joe Dumars."Fans have done nothing but point fingers at almost each and every player on the Pistons squad, saying that everyone has done something wrong and everyone needs to go, including Dumars. The biggest thing Pistons fans are so upset about are the signings of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. Okay sure, Charlie Villanueva averaged 12 points per game and Ben Gordon averaged 13.8 points per game, but neither of them stepped up as expected in their first year as a Piston. Big Deal.Villanueva only scored 2 points less per game this season than his career average, and Ben Gordon was sidelined about half the season with an ankle injury. In the last five games we saw a healthy Ben Gordon and what he can do. Averaging about 27 points per game (last 5 games), it shows a sign of something good to come next season for Detroit and Ben Gordon. Charlie Villanueva put his numbers back up to what he averages for his career at 13 points per game, and still has the ability to post up and shoot from long range. In my opinion, the signing of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva was not a mistake. It all revolves around who plays best with who while on the court. Next season these two will be warmed up to the atmosphere in Detroit and will put up better numbers.Next we have Rip Hamilton. Everyone seems to think he and Ben Gordon cannot coincide. Everyone also thinks that because he groveled about coming off the bench last season behind Allen Iverson, he will do the same coming off the bench behind Ben Gordon. Of course, everyone thinks he should be traded as well, but everyone seems to think he is not a good player anymore and no team wants to take on his contract.Rip does have a big contract that doesn't expire until 2013, so that I agree with. But saying Rip is not a legit player? This guy averages around 18 points per game every season for the Pistons and still has an amazing almost automatic shot. Any team in the NBA would love to have Rip Hamilton on the squad and know what a shooting threat this guy is.Also, Rip Hamilton complained about coming off the bench last season behind Iverson because he was not getting playing time. With the way Kuester plays his bench, he gives the bench players a lot of playing time and would give Rip the minutes to still put up his 18 points per game. Rip then would be satisfied ESPECIALLY if it got them into the post season. Rip would be a GREAT player to come off the bench with Will Bynum and keep the offense going. On to Rodney Stuckey. I myself have had my ups and downs about Rodney Stuckey these past couple seasons, saying he should be traded away and that he is not a very good guard. But if you look at what this kid has done, and how much he has improved the past couple seasons, you may say otherwise. Sure he still needs to learn to pass the ball, and run the offense as well as Will Bynum, but he has the ability to drive it in and draw contact Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
and get to the Charity Stripe where he is an 83 percent shooter.Stuckey averaged about 17 points per game this season and 5 assists. He was the reason the Pistons we winning games when Gordon, Hamilton, and Prince were all injured. Sure he is a good trade prospect with an expiring contract in 2011, but I don't expect Joe Dumars to trade away the player he kept to replace Chauncey Billups. Stuckey only needs to improve a few things on his game and he will be a legitimate guard.Next up, Tayshaun Prince. This is a guy a lot of fans are hard on. "He's getting old and out of his prime," "He's too skinny," "He isn't a scorer," "He isn't all that good of a defender." Are you guys watching the same Tayshaun Prince I have been watching since 2002? This guy has been the heart and soul of the Detroit Pistons for the past 8 years. How can anyone say he isn't a great defender? Does everyone not remember the block he had on Reggie Miller in 2004 that was said to be the play to lead the Pistons to win the Championship, and is one of the most memorable defensive plays in the history of the game?Tayshun suffered an injury for the first time in his career and has reduced him to average around 13 points per game and 5 assists for the season. So automatically fans hit the sites again saying Tay has got to go! But once Prince got healthy he once again was the heart and soul of the team. Tayshaun has completely dominated these past few weeks of the season putting up around 18 points per game and playing amazing defense. Everyone wants to see Prince get traded but it will NOT happen unless the Pistons receive a player that is a better defender than Prince. Now to the biggest topic, Joe Dumars. Everyone is now pointing fingers at Joe Dumars saying he has made one too many mistakes, and he needs to be booted out of Detroit. Why? Because even with Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Rasheed Wallace, and Tayshaun Prince the Pistons haven't won a championship since 2004. So he made it clear it was time for a change and traded off Chauncey Billups? Because people seem to think after a disappointing season that he just doesn't seem to care about the team anymore? This isn't just a business for Joe Dumars, this is his life. He loves Detroit and he loves the game of basketball. He is not, and will never be at the point where he doesn't care about the Pistons and start making decisions to purposely hurt the team.Joe had a vision then and still does. See, the Pistons right now are like the Michigan Wolverines. The Wolverines football team brought in a whole new system, and had to recruit all new players which takes more than two, three, or even four years to get the right pieces to the puzzle. Same goes for the Pistons. The Pistons are trying to get younger and faster but keep the defensive experience of Tayshaun Prince and Ben Wallace. It is going to take more than three years to rebuild a Pistons team to put them back into a Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
Championship contender.Dumars created a championship team once in 2004 and he can do it again! Fans, you need to be patient and give it time. Stop pointing fingers and saying we need to kick everyone out of Detroit just because they have an off game or an off season.Let's not hear anymore threats of firing Dumars or telling every player on the Pistons squad that they aren't good enough to be on the team. If we are injury free next season, we have a great chance to at least be a playoff contender. So be patient.

28 Dec 10 Deron Williams Is Flat Out the Best Point Guard on Earth

: Al Bello/Getty ImagesDespite Rajon Rondo and Steve Nash excellent performances last night, the fact remains that Deron Williams is simply the best point guard alive. Before you start writing angry Chris Paul rants in the comments section, let me say that Paul is my favorite point guard and that I think if he returns healthy he will regain his throne. But after the way he played at the end of this season, coming back from multiple leg injuries (including a very worrisome knee surgery), he has to prove he can still play his stratospheric level. Reebok New Orleans Saints #9 Drew Brees Realtree camo Jersey
What makes Williams so special, and what separates him from every other elite point guard in the game, is that he can excel in any style of play against any defender. In the full court, Williams devastating combination of size, speed, and control make him an absolute nightmare. His signature move, a full speed crossover he stole from Jason Kidd, allows him to get his broad shoulders past his defender so he can use his strength to finish at the rim or draw a foul. While Williams may look like a runaway train barreling down on defenders tied to the track, he always has his head up and rarely makes the wrong decision. His combination of physicality, control, and awareness, while moving at breakneck speed, is outstanding.Besides LeBron and Durant, there isn a more difficult player to stop once he gets a head of steam. When Paul explosiveness returns, he may have something to say about this.As for Nash and Rondo, they are primarily distributors in transition because they lack the strength and explosiveness to finish as consistently as Williams. Check out this dunk and tell me you disagree. In the half court, Williams benefits from a Utah offensive system that caters to his wide ranging abilities. Utah half court possessions usually go one of two ways.1) Deron Williams runs an excellent pick and roll with Boozer, Milsap, or Okur.2) Williams relinquishes the ball and becomes his team de facto shooting guard, sprinting off of screens and either dishing to cutters or elevating into his pure jumper.See the theme?Williams runs the pick-and-roll nearly as well as Chris Paul and Steve Nash because all three players can drive, dish, and shoot well enough to make the "p-n-r" action nearly unstoppable. But Deron is also the best catch and shoot point guard in the league. While Nash has a purer stroke and a slightly more consistent pull-up three, Williams ability to sprint off of picks a la Ray Allen and get great, balanced elevation under long distance shots separates him from Nash.Again, Nash has a Reebok New York Giants #27 Brandon Jacobs Realtree camo Jersey
purer stroke, but he cannot get it off at will the same way D-Will does. This skill is where Williams separates himself from other explosive guards as well.Rondo, Westbrook, and Rose can be left alone, or at least given a significant cushion, when behind the three-point line. This simply makes them easier to defend, especially in the half court. If you had to stop Williams, what weakness would you point to?He doesn turn the ball over like Steve Nash, he never disappears from a game like Rose, Rondo, or Westbrook, and he has the wheels to blow past any player big enough to handle him, unlike the slowing Billups.Aside from the currently weakened Paul, he has no equal.Next time you watch Williams, try to count the possessions that he wastes, not just with turnovers but with bad shots or passes that find ill-equipped teammates late in the shot clock. Williams not only has elite abilities, he is a consummate floor general. As much as I love Nash, who I think is second in line as the league best maestro, I can look past his inability to lock up big or quick guards or his propensity to cough the ball up to long armed defenders.Like Williams, Nash plays in an offensive system that hides his weaknesses and emphasizes his strengths.Nash isn really a bad defender, and he works hard to stay in front of his man, but just about any guard can shoot over him with ease, and the quickest PGs in the league turn his ankles to soup.Williams, on the other hand, can not only guard Westbrook, Rose, and Rondo, but also Kobe, Pierce, and Joe Johnson.Being critical, the main knocks on Williams are that he doesn have elite quickness and gets padded assist numbers by dishing to shooters coming off of screens rather than creating the shots himself. He often gets to the line through a very annoying move in which he basically drives straight into his defender and tosses up a shot while yelling bail me out!But this season, and especially this postseason, Williams has entered himself into the top three or four players in the NBA.My top five (in order) are LeBron, Wade, Williams, Howard, and Duncan (not happy with Howard so far this postseason, but he scores an average of 18 points and is the most intimidating/best defender in the league). Before you protest, answer this: In a Game Seven, tied ball game, with five minutes left in the fourth, what point guard would you want orchestrating your finish?Keep in mind that you know nothing about who playing well on your team, the pace of the game, or who your Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
point guard defender is.You would want a player with a steady disposition that will keep his teammates calm. You would want a player who can score in a variety of ways and is physical enough to earn cheap points at the line, but skilled enough to make three-pointers with a hand in his face. You would want someone who could score no matter what the defense chose to take away and who wouldn be a liability on defense. And you would want a guy with balls as big as Texas, a guy you can trust to find and make

27 Dec 10 Amare Stoudemire, Phoenix Suns, Need to Show Effort Against Lakers

Harry How/Getty ImagesThe Suns could use a lucky game from Amare Stoudemire.Instead, Stoudemire has proved that players who bark through the press before a game usually don't have much bite to begin with.Especially on defense. After calling Lamar Odom's 19-point, 19-rebound game "lucky" (lightening must have struck twice, because Odom had 17 and 11 in Game Two) and referring to Gasol's unsuccessful sojourn in Memphis, Stoudemire predictably didn't back it up when it mattered.Instead, his two verbal victims made Reebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey
a real victim out of Stoudemire. It's confounding. For a couple months, Stoudemire was playing adequate defense. He rotated, held his ground, moved his feet, acted like he cared. In the first two games of this series, he looks like a guy who's confident he's already earned his max contract.Pau Gasol is a skilled big man with great footwork, but it's not like he can out-muscle Amare. Not that he has to. Amare isn't even bothering to give Gasol a customary bump when the Spaniard rolls to the basket. It's like a one-on-one version of the World vs. Team USA circa 2004. Unmotivated talent versus passionate skill. No mystery as to which wins out.In a way, maybe Odom is lucky. He and L.A. have to feel fortunate with Stoudemire, and most of his teammates, not giving give a crap in the effort areas the shorter Suns need mostdefense and rebounding.Stoudemire's interest of the game is there only when the opportunity to score precedes it. It wasn't like that before the Lakers' series, and I can't help but wonder if this unexpected trip to the conference finals has made Amare complacent with his future.I don't buy the garbage Lakers fans have said about the Suns not being able to play defense in general. In the second and third quarters, Phoenix showed they couldwhen Reebok Dallas Cowboys #9 Tony Romo Realtree camo Jersey
they care. For two quarters out of eight, they (the bench, anyway) have cared. For two quarters out of eight, they've run out to Laker shooters with urgency instead of apathy. For two quarters out of eight, they've given a s***.And in those two quarters, Phoenix outscored the Lakers by 11 points combined. There comes a point when a period of good play comes to an end. During that feel-good time frame, it's easy to do the little things, because everyone has a blast winning. When the reality check comes, and the bubble is burst, championship teams (and franchise players) grit their teeth and do the ugly things to get to the team's next peak. The Suns, except for a couple quarters and a couple players in Game Two, aren't doing that.Amare Stoudemire, he who wants the max, is the biggest culpritalthough Channing Frye is running a close second. There was a play in the last two minutes that told the whole story. The game was 98 percent sewn up, but Steve Nash pulled up for a three. The telling scene was just after the threeNash tried to Reebok Denver Broncos #15 Tim Tebow Realtree camo Jersey
follow his shot and jumped as high as a white Canadian could for the rebound. Obviously he didn't get it.Stoudemire? He was lounging 20 feet away from the basket after exerting zero interest in his potential team-leading seventh rebound.'Nuff said.

26 Dec 10 Boston Celtics Put an End to Magic Tricks: Massacre in Boston

I've already had enough folks; if I have to read the pseudonym, moniker, or whatever the hell you classify "Krypto-Nate" as much more, I'm going to gouge my eyes out with a spork. It's not that Nate wasn't fantastic while making Doc look like the second coming of Nostradomus. Basically it just sucks as a nickname and I want to kill the beast before it gains power, okay?Whew, alright...back to the game. I guess maybe Matt Barnes was a tad off when he described the situation as "we've got a foot on their throats." The Celtics were Philadelphia Eagles jersey
once again, finally , the team from the first three games of the seriessuffocating defense and great ball movement combined with bench performances above and beyond the call of duty.Let's talk Kevin Garnett a moment, as I was searching for a picture of himdelivering those forearm shivers to DwightHoward. If I were a Magic fan, I'd be hating me some KG right now. But to be fair (and potentially biased), Dwight looked as though initially he was gripping Garnett's side with vise-like intensity. Try it on yourself, it hurts!I mean, it's not like Kevin went out of the way to try and hide what he was doing. In fact, it looked almost as though he tried to alert the ref, kind of a "get this motha#@* off of me man" type deal. Then he delivered the blow, and when Dwight tried to get back in the saddleKG gave himanother one for good measure. If youforcedme tochoose between a play like that or the tentative, "don't wanna get the refs started" type defense the rest of the team played on Superbow to that point, I'll take the fire and passion every time.Passion vs dirty, the age-old debate usually decided by which end of it your guy is on. I'll tell you what wasn't debatable; the Celtics played a far superior brand of basketball in game six. Credit Doc Rivers for keeping the depths of the bench mentally ready. I can't remember the last time I saw a player with as few playoff minutes as Nate Robinson have that kind of impact in a series-deciding game. You could sense after the first one went in for him that he had it going, and little big manwas strong on both ends of the floor.Onward to a gentleman who's had it going all series long, Paul Pierce. O captain, my captain, way to show up big in the spotlight, boy. Dude outscored and outrebounded the "most dominant"Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
center in the league when said center had his back against the proverbial wall. From hitting threes to creating his own shot, to timely steals, the Truth was in full effect in Beantown Friday night. He's starting to look suspiciously like the guy who was the best player in the '08 playoffs, and his timing is impeccable.Ray and Rajon were finally good for an entire game. Ray's been MIA for awhile now. Rajon started off strong in particular; he looked like he had his swag back and was on his way to filling up the ol' stat sheet until that tough fall that gave Nate his shot to get meaningful minutes. From my perspective, Ray's been a tad on the feast or famine side this postseason, I'd much rather see him consistently get 15-17 points instead of either 20+ or 5-9. Either way, when that guy is on there's not a prettier shot in the NBA.I'll tell you one thing that it's great to not be discussing today, and that's the officiating. I can handle my team losingfor Pete's sake, it's only a game. When I get heated is when the refs steal the show, and intentionally or not decide the outcome of a game. There may have been a few missed calls either way last night, but nothing so egregious it sticksin the mind the next day. If I'dhad to endure another one-way touch foul calling, phony technical foul plagued game either team's way last nightI would have taken a beer fueled dive through the picturewindow in the living room. In short, thank goodness the officials got one right. It's funny watching this 24/7 sports media swing back and forth like a pendulum in a grandfather clock. Three games in and the Celtics were the second coming, two wins later the sky is falling and Orlando's got the "magic" to pull off what 93 other teams couldn't.Meanwhile, coach Doc Rivers stays the course and reminds his team that this starting five has never lost a playoff series! That's quite the stat and one that I was completely blindsided by. Here's to hoping they keep that streak alive. Time for a little role play. if I were a Magic fan: If I were a Magic fan, I'd probably want Stan Van Gundy canned. He seems to overplay the "screaming Ron Jeremy clone" card, and I think the team tunes him out at times. I'd want to send V.C. and Rashard Lewis packing; Lewis in particular as I think Dwight would be helped by the presence of a more conventional "four" starting with him (although the only thing Vinceenhanced this series was hisrep for being a choke artist).I'd be reasonably happy with Dwight's intensity and the way it picked up over the second half of the series. I'd stillwant to see the smiles andjovial attitude with the opposition before the game toned down more (I read somewhere that he tried to fist bump KG before the game and got rejected). Most of San Diego Chargers jersey
all, I'd be puzzled by the enigma that is Jameer Nelson. He's a shorter point guard with a game that more resembles a shooting guard in my opinion. Some games he looks like a world-beater, and some games he gets an other-wordly beating. In general the roster the Magic have, while talented, is embodied by Jameer's inconsistencies and possible flaws.Well, it's off to the NBA Finals for the Celtics and their fans. Personally, I don't care who they play, as each Western Conference team presents such unique threats and matchups that neither can clearly be said to be more favorable. If the Celtics can maintain their hunger, focus, and intensity I have a hard time seeing either team beat them in a seven game series. Are the Lakers sexier? Are the Suns a more "feel good" story? Yes and yes, but once you get on the court nobody embodies "team" more than this bunch of storied veterans, cast-offs, and rising stars hailing from Beantown. C'mon C's, close the deal and let's get that record 18th championship banner!

25 Dec 10 Nets vs. Hawks: New Jersey Plays Well, but Hot Atlanta Team Just Too Much

(AP Photo/John Bazemore)The Atlanta Hawks may be without their highest-paid player in Joe Johnson, but they've been playing incredibly well lately and their hot play continued against the New Jersey Nets Tuesday night, winning 116-101.The Nets put forth a good effort, really one of their best in a while, but the combination of Josh Smith, Jamal Crawford and Al Horford was too much to overcome. With Smith consistently hitting outside shots, he proved nearly unstoppable, scoring 34 points on a 14-of-16 shooting night. He also hit 2-of-2 three-point attempts, a good numberDetroit Lions
for him, adding in seven assists, three rebounds and two blocks.Horford and Crawford combined for 50 points on 63 percent shooting. Horford also had 10 rebounds while Crawford dished out six assists. As a team, the Hawks shot 60 percent from the floor. They're actually playing better without Johnson than they were with him, helped by an added emphasis on ball-sharing and equal opportunities in terms of shot attempts. No Atlanta player put up more than 18 shots, with Horford being the only one to total that many. The Hawks have also figured out that Horford is much more suited to play power forward than center, which has enabled Smith to move to small forward, where he will have a size and strength advantage over most of his competition.Rookie Damion James played well against the Hawks. His minutes and quality of play have been steadily increasing. (Photo by Scott Cunningham/NBAE via Getty Images)Even though they lost, the Nets played well in this one. They were at 47 percent shooting, and got major contributions from Devin Harris and Brook Lopez.Lopez scored 24 points and got to the free throw line 11 times, while Harris tallied 18 points, handed out 13 assists and attempted 16 free throws of his own.Damion James, whom the Nets acquired from Atlanta in a draft-day trade, saw significant minutes and produced. He replaced Travis Outlaw; actually playing more off the bench than the starter; mainly due to his superior size.Outlaw is taller than James, but the rookie is noticeably thicker than Outlaw. Smith was Green Bay Packers jersey
able to push Outlaw around whenever he was guarded by him, and James provided more resistance.James ended up scoring 10 points, pulling down five rebounds in the process, and was the only player with more than 15 minutes on the positive side of the plus/minus stat (the team's net points when a player is on the floor).Jordan Farmar also played well, his confidence at an all-time high.New Jersey had its chances in this one. They fought back from a double-digit fourth quarter deficit to get within five with under five minutes to play. The real undoing of the team was the second quarter. After going on an 8-0 run early in the period to go up 36-29, the Nets were outscored 31-11 the rest of the way.Overall, Brook Lopez and the rest of the Nets played well and fought hard. They were just overmatched in this one. (Photo by Scott Cunningham/NBAE via Getty Images)That stretch was ultimately the reason New Jersey lost the game, as they played hard throughout and never backed down from what is, in reality, a superior team. The Hawks are, simply put, too good for the Nets right now. If they can play so unselfishly once Johnson returns, they could pose a major threat to Boston, Orlando and Miami in the Eastern Conference playoffs.New Jersey will have a day to recover before playing in Dallas Houston Texans jersey
on Thursday; Avery Johnson's first game against the team he coached to the Finals in 2006.It's a mismatch on paper, but if the team can play with enough energy, heart and hustle, they could sneak away with a win. A significant contribution from the returning Terrence Williams wouldn't hurt.

24 Dec 10 Washington Wizards: The Backlash from Gilbert Arenas' "Generous Offer"

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesWizards G Gilbert Arenas faked a knee injury to help backup G Nick Young. Young was expressing his frustration on not getting enough time playing, so Arenas, the All-Star guard, faked a knee injury, and Young got more playing time. But, as Gilbert had to be Gilbert, Minnesota Vikings
he told the media he was faking the knee injury. Now, backlash ensues.Arenas, in a meaningless preseason game, suffered a real injury, a pulled or strained hamstring, in a game versus the Milwaukee Bucks. Now, as G Nick Young gets more playing time, Arenas is hurt again. He now has to face the backlash. As the Wizards are still playing behind their No. 1 draft pick, John Wall, they are behind their most famous and infamous player (at the moment). Now, I am sure that EVERY NBA player wants to earn their own way on to the court, so we can only speculate as to how Young is feeling. Maybe he is flattered by Arenas' "selfless" actions, or perhaps insulted that Arenas had to fake a knee injury to get into a game. Now only time will tell how head coach Flip Saunders will handle this New England Patriots jersey
situation fully, but we can be certain that it will most likely be taken into a negative light because of Gilbert's past actions. Could Saunders' head be on the chopping block? Could the artist formerly known as "Agent 0," be packing his bags to a new organization?Only time, or actions or health, can tell...

23 Dec 10New Jersey Nets vs. Sacramento Kings: Turnovers, Offensive Rebounds Kill NJ

Evans led the Kings in scoring with 20. (Photo by Don Smith/NBAE via Getty Images)The New Jersey Nets fell to the Sacramento Kings 86-81 Friday night, due mostly to their turnovers and the many second-chance opportunities given to the Kings. The Nets had 17 turnovers on the night, seven of Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
them coming from Devin Harris who had his first truly bad game of the season.Harris went just 3-of-12 for 10 points. He did have eight assists, but they were negated by his turnovers.Brook Lopez struggled as well, scoring just seven points while going 3-for-9. He finally hit double-digits in rebounds with 10, but just as Harris' turnovers cancel out his assists, Lopez's inability to score greatly reduces his overall value in this game. For the team, their recent turnover binge is discouraging given that they had been improving in that department prior to this road trip. More on that at the end of the week. The other main factor in this loss was the Kings' offensive rebounding. The Nets again failed to effectively box out, tonight allowing Sacramento to grab 18 offensive boards.New Jersey has quietly been one of the better defensive teams in the NBA this year, and tonight they held the Kings to 43 percent shooting. The defensive effort was undermined, however, by the repeated second chances the Nets allowed.Cousins was not great, but did his job rebounding against a team that passed on him in the draft. (Photo by Don Smith/NBAE via Getty Images)It's a very good sign that this team is getting after it on defense, but, by failing to properly and consistently box out opposing players, all that work goes to waste.Anthony Morrow and Kris Humphries had good games, combing for 35 points on 77 percent shooting, with Humphries adding in 10 rebounds.Of course, Morrow's nice game means Travis Outlaw had a bad one, 5-ofReebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jersey
-12 and 1-for-5 on threes for 13 points, as the two just cannot seem to play well at the same time.I will look into this issue more deeply after tomorrow night's game. I want to see if this continues, but will explore the trend at greater length regardless.Outlaw was also not the only player who struggled on his threes, as the team as a whole was 2-of-11 from beyond the arc.It seems the three-point shooting that had been a strength for the team through the early part of this season has failed them in their last two games. For Sacramento, Tyreke Evans led the way with 20 points, although it took him 21 shots to get those points as he was at 38 percent.Carl Landry and Beno Udrih were also in double-figures with 15 and 12, respectively. Udrih hit a three in the final seconds that would Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey
essentially ice the game.DeMarcus Cousins was their leading rebounder with 10.The Nets will have to get over this loss quickly as they play Denver Saturday night. It will be Carmelo Anthony's first game this season against the team he could end up playing for.

Minnesota Timberwolves: Should They Give Al Jefferson One More Year?

Stephen Dunn/Getty ImagesAre the Minnesota Timberwolves ready to trade away arguably the best low post scorer in the NBA?Are they ready to trade away their only legit All-Star caliber player? Are they ready to trade away a guaranteed 20+ points and 10+ rebounds?Minnesota Timberwolves' forward Al Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
Jefferson has been on the trading block for a while now, and it looks almost inevitable that he will be traded, only for something significant I presume, at least that's what David Kahn states. But what I seriously am starting to think about is, who's going to score? Who's going to draw double teams? Who's going to provide that veteranship that Minnesota is going to need?Is it that the Minnesota Timberwolves fanbase had a change of heart? One year, Al Jefferson was a low post beast, averaging 23 points and 11 rebounds, with nearly two blocks a game. That Al Jefferson was feared, and revered as the best scoring big in the NBA.He goes down with a tore ACL injury, and in a little more than half a year, goes on to average 17 points and nine rebounds. It takes NBA players at least two years to recover Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
from that injury, yet Al Jefferson played through the pain and turmoil, not just physicall, but emotionally. The death of his grandmother, his knee aching and bothering him, the constant pain and losing, and the fact is that Al's confidence was on the decline. This summer is extremely important to Al Jefferson. He wants to be an All-star in the NBA, and word is he's working harder than ever to regain his All-Star status. If the Wolves desire to be a running/cutting/ and shooting team, having a post presence in the middle can draw double teams, and ultimately, the ball can be passed out of the post to open shooters. While Al isn't very skilled at this, he showed some flash playing next to Darko Milicic, who's an excellent passer out of the double team.I think Al Jefferson has been undervalued by the Wolves. He's been ridiculed for his defensive awareness, but the whole team was bad on defense, horrific in fact. He's been blamed for not showing up in the fourth quarter, but the Wolves haven't been in many late game situations for him to show up, and when they are, he does.He underwent a four game stretch in which he shot over 80 percent in 4th quarters, when the Wolves won four games in a row last season.I don't know, but I don't think I would be ready to part with him just yet.In his Boston Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
Celtics days, Al Jefferson was slightly more athletic, and he even ran the floor a little bit better.I'm hoping that Al stays, especially if the Wolves aren't offered anything significant. It seems premature for him to be traded right now.Think about it.

Red Sox-Yankees: Crawford and Gonzalez, With Cliff Lee As "Mike Donovan"?

Two Sox TimeMike Ehrmann/Getty ImagesWhat a time for the Internet connection to go on the fritz. Really, unnamed Internet service provider, in the middle of the winter meetings? During the offseason, from Thanksgiving to Christmas is the equivalent of October in-season.But in thinking about it, I am glad that I couldn’t log on for the last 24 hours. I needed that time to sit back and take it all in. Let it marinate, so to speak, and reflect upon what this means for the Monopoly money world that is Major League Baseball.Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez Buffalo Bills jersey
both headed to the Fens to showcase their talents in Boston Red Sox uniforms. Just take a second here. It has been almost a full day and yet I still find myself not quite grasping the magnitude of what has transpired. My friend Murph, a die-hard Sox fan, immediately threw up a Facebook posting saying, “I give you the new, Evil Empire.”When taking into account the shear magnitude of the cash involved in both of these deals, he may very well have a point. For the Red Sox this is like when C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira all signed with the Bronx Bombers. The end result was a championship ring tough, so can you blame any team for trying to better their club. As long as no salary cap exists then as an organization you’ve got to keep up with the Joneses. So let’s assume that we do now have two "Evil Empires". We will call one the "Original Evil Empire" and we will call the other the "New Kids on the Block" (only seems appropriate considering Jordan, Jonathan, Joey, Donny and Danny were assembled in Beantown).Bigger off-season splash?Bigger off-season splash?Crawford/Gonzalez64.3%Cliff Lee35.7%Total votes: 98Let us now talk a bit about these two superpowers. Is there any possible way that the Yankees can crawl out from under the Carolina Panthers jersey
surprising and indescribably large offseason shadow that the Red Sox have created? The Sox are like the Visitors from V. They are the mother ship that is just sitting over top of the Bronx right now blocking out the sun.The Yankees are hoping that Cliff Lee can be the Marc Singer of their resistance (Yep, I took it all the way back to 1984. The original V the Final Battle television miniseries.) The problem for New York however is two-fold.Number one is the fact that Mr. Lee has suitors from around the league. Texas, the Nationals and the Yankees are all gunning for the hurler, and with the Angels losing out on Carl Crawford they are throwing their halo into the mix as well. And B) I don’t think Cliff Lee is big enough all by himself to counter the duo of Gonzalez and Crawford. If we are using the amount of money one garners as a judge to who is the best in their respective position, Crawford just received an obscene amount of money that would make him the highest paid outfielder in the league, while the Yankees latest offer to Lee wouldn’t even make him the highest paid pitcher on their team. Lee or no Lee, it seems to me that the Red Sox shadow remains. So baseball fans get ready for the inevitable barrage of predictions sure to circulate for the next several months about how the Chicago Bears jersey
Red Sox are now the favorites to win not only the AL East but also the World Series. To that end, I suggest we not forget about a few other teams that might have something to say about such a prediction. Only one thing is for sure, Tampa Bay is not one of them. Poor Evan Longoria.

20 Dec 10 Adrian's Throwback of The Week: The 2004 Auburn Tigers and The SEC Championship

Auburn RB Ronnie BrownAndy Lyons/Getty ImagesThis coming Saturday the Auburn Tigers square off against the South Carolina Gamecocks with the SEC Championship on the line. If Auburn wins, they will play in their first BCS Title Game. The last Auburn team to win the SEC was the 2004 Tigers squad, a team that many pundits still claim should have been in that year's BCS Championship Game. Let's throw it back.....The BackstoryEvery Auburn fan wants to compare this year's Auburn team to the undefeated one in 2004. The 04 team was a juggernaut. They were No.1 in scoring defense and 18th in offense.Four Auburn players were first round NFL Draft picks in the 2005 NFL Draft. Three of them were on the offensive side of the ball; RB Ronnie Brown (#2), RB Cadillac Williams (#5) and QB Jason Campbell (#25). Brown and Williams combined to run for 2,078 yards and 20 touchdowns. Campbell threw for 2,700 yards and 20 touchdowns.Three other offensive starters were selected in the 2006 NFL Draft. These include OT Marcus McNeil (2nd Round), WR Ben Obamanu (7th Round) and WR Devin Aromashodu (7th Round). G Ben Grubbs was a 2007 NFL First Round pick.Even with all the talent on the offensive side of the ball, the staple of the team was the defense. Eight of the 11 starters would go on to play in the NFL. 2005 First Round NFL draftee (#9 overall) CB Carlos Rogers took away half the field. He was a phenomenal cover corner. DT Jay Ratliff was a force in the middle and would go on to make the Pro-Bowl with the Cowboys in the NFL.Auburn CB Carlos RogersChris Graythen/Getty ImagesAll season long, the Tigers had to prove the voters wrong as they steadily climbed up the polls week after week. The SEC Championship Game was their last chance to make a statement before the final BCS Standings would be unveiled. Auburn (11-0) ranked third behind No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 1 USC.The GameAuburn's opponent in the SEC Championship was Tennessee (9-2), ranked 15th in the country. The Volunteers went 7-1 en route to winning the SEC East.Campbell had a fantastic game as he threw for over 300-yards for the Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey first time in his career as Auburn won 38-28. Campbell, the MVP of the contest, went 27-of-35 for 374 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers. The Tigers made a statement on the first play of the game as Campbell hit Courtney Taylor for a 56-yard pass play. Auburn capped off the opening drive with a touchdown as Cole Bennett recovered a Cadillac Williams fumble in the end zone. After a quick three-and-out from Tennessee, Auburn would strike with another touchdown drive. Williams would hold on to the ball this time rushing for a 5-yard touchdown off the left side. At the 8:28 mark in the first quarter, Auburn took a quick 14-0 advantage.Auburn took a 21-7 halftime lead.Auburn QB Jason CampbellMatthew Stockman/Getty ImagesTennessee showed some life coming out of the locker room for the second-half. They scored on their first two possessions to start the third quarter to tie the game at 21.Calmly and coolly, Auburn responded with a 53-yard touchdown pass as Campbell connected with Devin Aromashodu. The Tigers tacked on a field goal early in the fourth quarter to put them back up by ten.The final Auburn blow came at the 6:56 mark as Campbell threw his third touchdown as he hit Ben Obamanu for a 43-yard strike. The final score, 38-28, wasn't indicative of how much Auburn controlled the game. Auburn dominated Tennessee in all aspects; possession 39:31-20:29, total yards 559-297, first downs 31-9 and passing yards 374-69.The AftermathOver the last couple of years the argument has been made to get rid of the NCAA Preseason Poll. Looking back at the 2004 season, USC and Oklahoma Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jerseystarted the season No. one and two, and finished the regular season the same way. Auburn started the season ranked 17th in the AP poll.Which Auburn team is better, the 2010 team or the 2004 teamWhich Auburn team is better, the 2010 team or the 2004 team2004 Auburn Tigers83.3%2010 Auburn Tigers16.7%Total votes: 6I don't think the problem is the preseason poll, it's the perception. USC and Oklahoma came into the year as established programs consistently making BCS appearances. USC had two consecutive BCS wins under their belt as they beat Michigan in the 2004 Rose Bowl 28-14, and Iowa in the 2003 Orange Bowl 38-17. Oklahoma came onto the national scene in the 1999 season as they finished undefeated defeating Florida State 13-2 in the 2000 National Championship Game (Orange Bowl). They lost to LSU 21-14 in the 2004 National Championship Game (Sugar Bowl). It also didn't hurt that they were bringing back the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in QB Jason White. Then Auburn head coach Tommy Tubberville did a great job of steadily building Auburn's program, but they simply weren't on the same level as USC and Oklahoma. Auburn defeated Wisconsin the previous year 28-14 in the Music City Bowl. Not exactly a BCS game. You could see why, if USC and Oklahoma finished undefeated, they were on a collision course to meet in the Title Game. Playoff Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jerseyanyone?Looking back now, it's very easy to see why people think Auburn should've been in the Title Game instead of Oklahoma. USC throttled Oklahoma in the National Championship Game 55-19. Auburn settled for the Sugar Bowl, defeating ACC winner and No. 9 Virginia Tech 16-13. Auburn had a 16-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The PresentThis year's Auburn squad is not only playing for themselves, but also vindication for the 2004 team. With a win on Saturday, the Tigers will be well on their way to achieving their goal.It will be the second meeting of the season between Auburn and South Carolina. Auburn overcame a 14-point first half deficit to win the game nine weeks ago 35-27.While the 2004 team may actually be the better team, there's no doubt that Cam Newton is the best overall player between both rosters. Controversial or not, his performance in the Iron Bowl solidified his Heisman Trophy.NEXT WEEK...25 years ago the Bears shuffled their way to a Super Bowl title. Boy have times changed for each franchise that participatedin that Super Bowlgame.

19 Dec 10 Thursday Night Football Preview: Running Game Key to Chicago Bears Victory

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesUsually, writing a preview for an NFL game during the previous week's Monday Night Football game is a bit too early. However, three things have forced me to be more anxious to write a preview for this Thursday's matchup between the Chicago Bears and the Miami Dolphins. One of Reebok Baltimore Ravens #52 Ray Lewis Realtree camo Jersey
those factors, obviously, is the fact that the game is to be played on Thursday. Therefore, as much as I would like to savor the Bears' victoryover Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings, I have to put my focus on the task at hand a little earlier than usual.Another reason for the early preview is, well, the Eagles have already sealed the Monday night victory over the Redskins. The other, and perhaps most important, factoris a piece of breaking news that is very relevant to the upcoming game.Due to injuries to Dolphin quarterbacks Chad Pennington and Chad Henne, Miami will start its third-string quarterback. His name is Tyler Thigpen.Yes, Tyler Thigpen. Former quarterback of the mediocre 2008 Kansas City Chiefs. Now, before Bears fans prematurely celebrate a second big victory in five days, there are acouple ofthings Chicago must do to make sure they leave South Beach with a win.Contain the Dolphins'Running GameInChicago's win over the Vikings, the Bears' run defense held Minnesota to a total of Reebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
70 yards rushing. Adrian Petersonran for only 51 yards on 17 carries. It doesn't get any easier for the Bears' defense, as it faces Miami's running duo of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. If the Bears can shutdown the Dolphins' running game like it did the Vikings', it will force Thigpen to win the game for Miami. Brett Favre couldn't get Minnesota a win by himself, so there's no reason to believe Thigpen, who hasn't started an NFL game since 2008, will be able to do so either.Keep Up the BalancedOffenseConsidering Mike Martz's reputation as a pass-first offensivecoordinator, Iwas impressed with his ability to mix some runs in his offensive game plan the past two games. In Chicago's victory over the Buffalo Bills, Matt Forte and Chester Taylor combined for 24 rushing attempts, in comparison to Jay Cutler's 30 passes. In the Minnesota game, Forte and Taylor 21 and 11 times, respectively, while Cutler threw the ball 35 times.Mixing in some runs has worked out for the Bears not only by giving Reebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
Cutler more passing options as a result of defenses having to respect the running game. It also keeps the opposing offense on the sidelines. If the Bears can win the time-of-possession battle against the Dolphins, it will help them win this game.

18 Dec 10 Jets vs. Browns: New York Provides Glimpse of What Cleveland Can Be

Matt Sullivan/Getty ImagesThere was no shortage of story lines coming into Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. Rob and Rex Ryan grabbed headlines with their good-natured jabs at one another. Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini faced the team that he helped build but which ultimately fired him. After convincing wins over the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints and a drubbing of the Patriots, the Browns looked to continue their winning ways against top-tier teams.Enter the 6-2 Jets—physical defense, strong running game, young quarterback. Sound familiar? It took nearly five full quarters of action to decide the contest. With just 16 seconds left in overtime, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez completed a pass to wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
Holmes did the rest, racing past cornerback Eric Wright and rookie safety T.J. Ward. This toe-to-toe slug fest was the result of the two teams being a mirror image of each other. The reason the Jets came out on top is because New York is simply further along in the process. The Jets offensive line is anchored by Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold and fellow Pro Bowl left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson. The Browns, meanwhile, have second-year, first-round draft pick Alex Mack at center and three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas.Matt Sullivan/Getty ImagesMack, highly regarded as a smart, physical center, has helped block for a resurgent running game featuring Peyton Hillis. Joe Thomas has given rookie quarterback Colt McCoy time to stand in the pocket and look downfield. The New York Jets have two of the best cornerbacks in the league with Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. The Browns seem to have found the real deal in cornerback Joe Haden and safety T.J. Ward.Haden, the seventh overall pick out of Florida, has been earning more playing time this season. Matched up one-on-one with Jets Pro Bowl receiver Braylon Edwards, Haden more than held his own. Braylon was limited to four receptions for 59 yards. Haden also recorded hisReebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
second career interception while guarding Edwards near the end of overtime.Although Ward missed in a big way on the final pass to Santonio Holmes, he has had a fine rookie season and has brought a physical presence to the defense. Ward, a big hitter, has been great in run support and has recorded a team-high 75 tackles. The difference between the two teams became apparent in the passing game. With 10:14 left in overtime, Colt McCoy hit wide receiver Chansi Stuckey for 14 yards to bring the Browns into field goal range. However, in an attempt to gain extra yardage, the ball was jarred loose and recovered by the Jets.Matt Sullivan/Getty ImagesOn the ensuing drive, Jets receiver Jerricho Cotchery made an amazing catch for a first down. Hobbling out of his break with an apparent groin injury, he somehow made a diving catch for a first down while fighting off tight coverage. The Jets did not score on that drive, but the resulting field position led to the final sequence of events. The Browns did get the ball back, but it was from their own 3-yard line.Unable to move out of their own end, the Jets were able to start from the Browns 37. Even without the final touchdown, at the very least, New York was already in field goal range for a last second attempt. Reebok Minnesota Vikings 28 Adrian Peterson Realtree camo Jersey
The Cleveland Browns are being built in the image of the New York Jets. If everything remains constant, there is every reason to believe they will be among the elite teams in the NFL in one to two years. The difference in Sunday’s game came down to playmakers at the wide receiver position. The Jets had them, and the Browns did not.

17 Dec 10 Seattle Seahawks Can't Stop Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesJust like the blowout loss against the Giants, that was about what we expected. The Seahawks’ horrible pass defense couldn’t slow down Drew Brees and the potent Saints offense, and the Seahawks once again showed just how far they are from becoming a contender as the Saints won 34-19. In addition, several more injuries reinforced our previously expressed opinion that the NFL is crazy to be pushing an 18-game schedule, and offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates made a bad personnel decision as Marshawn Lynch has made a month’s worth of mistakes. The 'Hawks had given up huge passing days to almost every quarterback they had faced, so it was predictable that they would be picked apart by a guy who is one of Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
the top four passers in the league. Brees threw for 382 yards and four touchdowns, becoming the eighth quarterback in 11 games to eclipse 285 passing yards against Seattle and the sixth to throw at least two TD passes. Protected by his stout line, Brees was not sacked, and the Saints converted 11 of 15 third downs. Even when the Hawks did hit him, they got penalized for it—specifically the questionable roughing call against Raheem Brock at the end of the first half that kept the Saints’ drive alive and enabled them to score two plays later to go up 27-13. It was just more of what we’ve seen all year as the 'Hawks have neither the right players nor the right scheme to stop opposing quarterbacks. On top of that, they have had trouble against the run in recent weeks because of injuries to defensive tackles Brandon Mebane, Colin Cole and Red Bryant. Mebane is back, but the 'Hawks are not stout enough with Junior Siavii and Kentwan Balmer. Chris Ivory ran for 99 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. The Seahawks’ defensive issues were compounded by the loss of cornerback Marcus Trufant with an apparent concussion. They also lost wide receiver Mike Williams in the second half for the second time in three games, as he left with a foot injury. Injuries in the NFL reportedly are at an all-time high, and the Seahawks are as banged up as just about anybody. Commissioner Roger Goodell and the owners are nuts to think an 18-game schedule will improve the quality of the NFL. On the bright side, Williams had another good game. Before leaving, he caught six passes for 109 yards from Matt Hasselbeck, who completed 32 of 44 passes for 366 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions—with a broken left wrist. It was his most passing yards in a game since he threw for 414 against Dallas in that crazy 43-39 Monday night loss in 2004. Hasselbeck seems to have found his comfort zone in the offense. If only Lynch could find his. The 'Hawks gained just 58 rushing yards on 17 attempts. Lynch led the way with 36 yards on seven runs, but he fumbled twice and also dropped two passes. Bates made a very bad coaching error by leaving Lynch in the lineup in the third quarter, when the 'Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers 43 Troy Polamalu Realtree camo Jersey
Hawks started to throw the ball more. After Lynch had dropped two passes and fumbled, he returned for a drive that started on Seattle’s 5-yard line. Hasselbeck threw four passes to him on the drive; he caught them all, but fumbled on the last one at the New Orleans 46. That was the dagger that killed the Hawks’ chances of coming back, as the Saints scored to make it 34-16. Leon Washington replaced Lynch after that, but it was too late. Justin Forsett should have been playing well before it came to that; he is simply the better back in pass-heavy situations. Lynch came to Seattle with a reputation as “The Beast,” a tough all-around back who would add a physical punch to Seattle’s running attack. The attitude is there, but not the production. He was supposedly faster than Forsett and just as capable of catching the ball, but he has proven to be neither. Forsett is much more explosive, quick and elusive—and easily has better hands. Entering this game, Lynch was averaging 2.7 yards per carry, Forsett 4.7. Basically, Lynch’s bark has been worse than his bite. Some of that can be laid on the offensive line’s woes, but Lynch played a horrible game in New Orleans. Speaking of the line, it was nice to have Russell Okung back. But the left tackle was definitely rusty. And left guard Chester Pitts had a rough game, with penalties for holding and a false start. With any luck, those two will stay healthy and the Hawks can develop some kind of Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
chemistry up front for the final six games. Other than Hasselbeck’s play, the biggest bright spot in the day was the fact that every other team in the NFC Worst lost. Even at 5-5, the Seahawks still lead the way.Four of the final six games are at home, and the 'Hawks have a legitimate chance to finish 9-7 and win the division (heck, 8-8 would probably do it).

16 Dec 10 Philadelphia Eagles: Does MVP Stand for Michael Vick in Philly?

Nick Laham/Getty ImagesIt was Christmas Eve 2006. The Atlanta Falcons were hosting the Carolina Panthers in Week 16.Down by seven with just six seconds on the clock, Michael Vick took the snap from shotgun and threw a 35-yard dart intended for Roddy White. The pass was not a good one. Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
Shaun Williams, the Panthers defensive back, intercepted the pass and sealed the Falcons' eighth loss of the season. That was the last time Michael Vick threw an interception.Four years, 218 pass attempts and 13 touchdowns later, Michael Vick has taken the NFL by storm. He has his Philadelphia Eagles sitting atop the division and playing as well as any team in the league. He leads the NFL in passer rating at 108.7.In games that Michael Vick both starts and finishes (without injury) the Eagles are 5-0 with an average point differential of plus-14.2.In the other five games, the Eagles are 2-3 with an average point differential of minus-2.6.In the five games that Michael Vick both started and finished, the Eagles have a combined total of two turnovers. In the other five games the Eagles have nine turnovers. With Vick at the helm, the Eagles play efficient, productive football.Vick's streak of 218 consecutive pass attempts without an interception already ranks among some of the best. He is 90 pass attempts away from Bernie Kosar's all-time record of 308.If he keeps up his average of 30 pass attempts per game, he needs just three more games without an interception to reach the record. He has already set an Eagles franchise record by starting the season with 191 pass attempts without throwing an interception.Assuming that Michael Vick is able to stay healthy and continues to play at the level that he has shown, he has to be the favorite for MVP.Other quarterbacks, such as Phillip Rivers and Tom Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
Brady, are putting up more numbers. But nobody is putting up more efficient numbers.Nobody is playing better, and nobody is as big of a reason that his team is winning.Remember before Vick took over, many people—Philly fans included—counted 2010 as a rebuilding year.Vick has clearly and single-handedly changed those expectations with his MVP-caliber level of play.

Chicago Bears Living Off Low Expectations: Doubt Us to Dallas

Brian Urlacher stares down the opponent. The Chicago Bears have had low expectations from the beginning of season. These expectations have been well-marked, with the majority of the "experts" picking the Bears to finish below .500 on the season. Brian Urlacher and the Monsters of the Midway have been living off of these low expectations all season long. Though this team seemed to strike out with free agent coaches (promoted Rod Marinelli from Defensive Line Coach to Defensive Coordinator, and hired Mike Martz as Minnesota Vikings jersey
Offensive Coordinator when he could not get any interest anywhere else), the Bears have found ways to win all season long. Whether it was being the beneficiary of a bad rule (Week 1 vs. Lions), the opponent beating themselves (Week 3 vs. Packers), taking advantage of injuries (Week 10 vs. Dolphins) or being faster than the fastest team in football (Week 11 vs. Eagles), the Bears keep finding ways to win. Now 8-3 on the season, and with their playoff future in their own hands, the Chicago Bears have a message for all the experts, opposing fans, and yes, even their own skeptical fans: keep doubting us. Chicago seems to play best when they should have no shot at all. Six times this season, the Bears have been the underdogs in their match-ups. In those six games, the Bears are 4-2, and allowed only 17 points in their losses. After the impressive victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon, Peggy Kusinski of NFL Network asked Urlacher if he thought the Bears would get respect now. Urlacher's response:
And that, my friends, my brethren, is the attitude this team has nfl jerseys
taken on. And guess what else? It's working. The Bears will have more chances to prove the doubters wrong. The last four games for the Beloved include a home game vs. the New England Patriots, away at the Minnesota Vikings, home against the New York Jets, and close the season as Lambeau Field against the Packers. There is a good chance they will be the underdogs in each of these games. With their destiny in their own hands, the Bears need to play bigger over this last five game stretch than they have all season. It all starts with next weekend, at Detroit. The Bears have to do work against the Lions, and take care of business. If the Bears can manage a 2-3 record over their last five, they will finish 10-6 on the season and almost assuredly find themselves in the playoffs. Chicago has been doubted all season long, and they don't seem to care. It is imperative that this mentality drives them to a few more victories on the season. If Cutler continues to make good decisions, and the three-headed monster of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Julius Peppers, Lance Briggs, and the aforementioned Urlacher keep playing at the level they are playing, we just may see an extended season for Chicago in a year that they seemed to have nothing but a hope and prayer before the first snap. Keep doubting, doubters. The Bears and their fans love proving you wrong.

Week 13 Fantasy WR Rankings: Which WR Is Ranked Somewhere Over The DwayneBowe?

Week 13 WR Player Rankings: Brought to you by pyromaniac.com Rankings for QBs, RBs and TEsClick for the WR Rankings Nos. 21-48 20. Braylon Edwards (@ NE) – Holmes won’t be the only one getting in on the fun, with the Patriots having one of the worst pass Ds in the league. 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
Bray had five catches for 45 yards and a TD in the first contest, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see that much and more come Monday. 19. Wes Welker (vs NYJ) – Welker had six catches and a TD in their first game this year, but I expect even better than that as he’ll be counted on quite a bit to move the ball this Monday night. Since joining the Pats back in 2007, Welker has a reputation of coming up big against the Jets, a trend that should continue in Week 13. 18. Johnny Knox (@ Det) – The Detroit pass D can and WILL be beat this Sunday. Johnny Knox is still the main guy for Cutler and remains the most likely candidate to break off a long one at any time. 17. Anquan Boldin (vs Pit) – With the amount of pressure Flacco is likely to see this game, you can bet Boldin will be getting a ton of dump-offs like he did in his last game against them. 10 targets, seven receptions and 68 yards is what he put up the first time around. With any luck, he’ll add a TD to that line and give fantasy owners something to cheer about. 16. Larry Fitzgerald (vs StL) – Derek Anderson may be a trainwreck, but at least he knows who butters his bread. Fitz is talented enough to explode at any time, and it’s a good bet he catches a TD this week like he did earlier this year against the Rams. 15. Mario Manningham (vs Was) – Manningham will be in the driver’s seat for some nice fantasy points again this weekend with both Nicks and Smith out. If he doesn’t come close to around 100 yards plus a touchdown, I’ll be shocked. 14. Mike Wallace (@ Bal) – So the Roethlisberger-to-Wallace combo CAN be stopped (as it was against Buffalo last Sunday). Wallace looks like he might be a bit of a risk this Sunday night, but this sort of risk also comes with high reward. Take the chance on Wallace breaking out a long one in this game. 13. Andre Johnson (@ Phi) – ‘Dre may have avoided a suspension due to his fight with Cortland Finnegan last week, but he won’t be able to avoid Asante Samuel (assuming he’s healthy enough to play) sitting in his pocket all game. He’ll do okay, but don’t expect big numbers this week. 12. Santonio Holmes (@ NE) – This game has all the makings of a classic, and what usually happens in games like this? The best players come out to play and give the world a show. Santonio is that guy for the Jets, so expect a nice little showing out of the former Super Bowl MVP this week. 11. Mike Williams – TB (vs Atl) – Williams was held to his worst outing of the year last week against the Ravens (two catches, 20 yards), but my guess is he’ll bounce back nicely. Last game against the Falcons he put up 89 yards and a TD, numbers I could see happening again this Sunday. 10. Calvin Johnson (vs Chi) – For as talented as Megatron is, nothing seems to 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey black jersey
ever go his way. If it’s not his own injuries, surely his favorite QB's will go down. Drew Stanton will look for him every chance he gets, which still gives Calvin some value, but he won’t be the player you were hoping for down the stretch. 9. Jeremy Maclin (vs Hou) – Vick loves tossing the rock to Maclin, so even though DeSean should and WILL get his targets, expect J-Mac to reel in a good seven or so receptions for some decent yardage and a TD Thursday night. 8. Steve Johnson (@ Min) – Stevie J probably embarrassed himself more than he’s ever done so in his life last week against Pittsburgh. The great ones tend to use stuff like this as motivation, and I believe Johnson will step up to the plate against a beatable Vikings secondary because of it. 7. Reggie Wayne (vs Dal) – Wayne could see a ton of targets in this one, as the Cowboys pass D is one of the worst in the league. He’s had a few rough games over the past five weeks, but this one should be able to break him out of his slump. 6. Marques Colston (@ Cin) – Since Colston found his groove back in Week 7, he hasn’t looked back. Over the last five games, the Big Queese has four TD catches while averaging 7.6 catches and 94 yards. Basically, just roll with him. 5. DeSean Jackson (vs Hou) – DeSean got called out by Coach Andy Reid last week for not taking the Bears game seriously. Whenever a scolding like this occurs, one of two things can happen: 1) The player tucks his tail between his legs and disappears from significance, or 2) The player steps up his game and dominates immediately thereafter. Against the worst pass defense in the league, I’m betting on no. 2. 4. Roddy White (@ TB) – Roddy had a tough time against these guys last time around, catching just four balls for 49 yards, but you can’t hold talent like his back for very long. Last year White had a touchdown in each of his games against the Bucs, and I expect him to do the same this weekend with close to 100 yards. 3. Greg Jennings (vs SF) – Jennings has been a top-three receiver over the past six weeks, putting up an average of 6.2 catches and106.5 yards. He also has six TDs over that span. If there’s one way the 49ers can definitely be beat, it’s through the air, so watch out for another Jennings explosion this weekend. 2. Dwayne Bowe (vs Den) – Bowe 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
simply cannot be stopped, so don’t you dare go thinking that Champ Bailey will somehow figure it all out after getting burned for 13 catches, 186 yards and two TDs the last time they hooked up. 1. Brandon Lloyd (@ KC) – The surprising Broncos receiver had 90 yards and two TDs in his last game against Kansas City, and even if the Chiefs' young stud cornerback Brandon Flowers is healthy enough to play, his hamstring won’t be able to keep up with Lloyd. Denver Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels Fired After Discouraging Season

Justin Edmonds/Getty ImagesBreaking news broke today regarding Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels' job security.McDaniels has been fired as the head coach of the Broncos after a relatively discouraging tender and running back coach Eric Studesville will become the interim head coach. 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
McDaniels tenure was marred by multiple mistakes and infractions including: the "Mini Spygate Scandal," an 11-17 record throughout his stint, as well as trading Peyton Hillis for journeyman quarterback Brady Quinn and draft picks as Hillis is one of the top RB's in the NFL over the past few weeks."My decision to relieve Josh McDaniels as head coach was not taken lightly. I will always be appreciative of his passion, enthusiasm and hard work, and I thank him for his efforts. In the end, I was not satisfied with the results and the direction this team was headed," Broncos owner Pat Bowlen said."The decision to make a change was extremely difficult but one that needed to be made for this organization and our fans. Everyone, myself included, is accountable for our disappointing season and is now responsible for restoring the culture of 43 Polamalu white jersey
winning that has been established by this franchise. Our entire organization is completely focused on returning to the level of prosperity that our fans expect and deserve from the Denver Broncos."Presumably, the Broncos will begin a search for their next head coach during the offseason.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are replacing the much-maligned turf at Heinz Field February 18 2005

Colts jersey
PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania - The Pittsburgh Steelers are replacing the much-maligned turf at Heinz Field - again. The work, however, actually began before the NFL Players Association released a player survey rating it among the five worst playing surfaces earlier this month. In that 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
survey, Steelers players rated their own playing surface as the worst in the league. Two years ago, the Steelers installed DD GrassMaster - a hybrid surface that combines real sod with synthetic fibers - after complaints that the footing was poor on the sand-based grass surface in place when the field opened in 2001. Earlier this month, workers again scraped off the surface - about a half-inch of top soil - but they're not changing turfs, they're again installing a DD GrassMaster surface. The Steelers are hoping that will help because the Denver Broncos did the same thing at Invesco Field at Mile High, and that field was ranked the eighth-best in the league by players. Club president Art Rooney II said the Steelers considered fully synthetic FieldTurf, which theSteelers 36 Bettis Jersey
Steelers use on their indoor practice field across town. "We didn't do any actual survey," Rooney said, "but we talked to some of the players about our field and whether to put in FieldTurf. None of them said they'd rather go to FieldTurf."

San Francisco 49ers Alex Smith Reggie Bush

What an ironic twist. The two teams that currently hold the worst records in the NFL will face off in Week 16. When the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans square of on that final Sunday of the regular season, the outcome could very well determine where USC running back Reggie Bush ends up next year.So should the two teams attempt to throw the game for the sake of securing the rights to Reggie Bush? Highly unlikely, although I'm sure that many of the coaches and players have contemplated the thought, even if only half seriously. As far asSteelers 43 Polamalu jersey
the San Francisco 49ers are concerned, securing either the 1st or 2nd overall pick is just another indication of just how far the once proud franchise has fallen. For the second straight season, the 49ers have turned out to be perennial doormats with few truly promising young players. Brandon Lloyd seems to be a Pro Bowler in the making and Alex Smith may eventually develop into a top tier passer, but for the time being San Francisco seems far away from being able to contend. So they'll welcome in Houston on January 1st and play a game with only pride (and possibly the top draft pick) at stake.

San Francisco 49ers "Will secondary moves help 49ers pick up ground?"

If the San Francisco 49ers are to pass their rivals in the NFC West, they know they will have to stop the pass. All three of the 49ers' divisional foes have potent passing attacks -- the St. Louis Rams behind their Pro Bowl trio of Marc Bulger, Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce, the Seattle Seahawks with Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and his quality quartet of receivers, and the Arizona Cardinals with rising young quarterback Matt Leinart throwing to Pro Bowl targets Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald. With so many explosive 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
offenses in the division, every team seems to understand the importance of shutting down opposing aerial attacks. At least their offseason moves said they do.With the exception of Arizona, every team brought in at least five players to help stop the pass. The Cardinals, who were 30th in the league against the pass last season (231 yards per game), only brought in safety Terrence Holt and cornerback Rod Hood. But the Rams, who had the best pass defense in the division last season (partly because their run defense was so terrible), added four secondary players -- safety Todd Johnson and cornerbacks Mike Rumph, Lenny Walls and rookie Jonathan Wade -- and two ends, James Hall and first-round pick Adam Carriker. The Seahawks, who ranked 16th versus the pass in 2006, have new starting safeties Deon Grant and Brian Russell, second-round cornerback Josh Wilson, and new ends Patrick Kerney and Baraka Atkins (a fourth-round pick). Not to be outdone, the 49ers did their best to keep up in the West. On the first day of free agency, the team signed cornerback Nate Clements to a blockbuster deal and added safety Michael Lewis. The 49ers then re-signed Pro Bowl corner Walt Harris to a two-year deal and drafted three more pass defenders -- pass rusher Jay Moore and safety Dashon Goldson in the fourth round, as well as cornerback Tarell Brown in the fifth. They also signed pass-rushing linebacker Tully Banta-Cain.The 49ers are hoping those additions improve a pass defense that ranked 26th in 2006, giving up 223 yards per game, and also surrendered 25 touchdown passes (fourth most in the league) and a 63.9 completion percentage (third worst in the league).Clements, who received $22 million guaranteed, will start at left cornerback, and Lewis is expected to replace Keith Lewis as the new strong safety alongside Mark Roman. Harris is expected to start at right corner, but Shawntae Spencer, who started opposite Harris last season, could push him.The 49ers' moves should help them in the pass-happy West, where they actually weren't too bad in 2006. The Cardinals were the only team that really hurt the 49ers through the air. In Week 1, Kurt Warner threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns in Arizona's 34-27 win. And at the end of the season, Leinart and Warner combined to complete 18 of 26 passes for 267 yards and a score in Arizona's 26-20 win, which eliminated the 49ers (6-9) from playoff contention. The 49ers actually held Bulger in check -- with the exception of one huge drive. In Week 2, the 49ers sacked the St. Louis quarterback six times and held him to 185 passing yards and one touchdown in San Francisco's 20-13 win. They also shut him down in Week 12 -- until the final drive, when he completed all nine passes for 66 yards, including the winning 5-yard TD toss to Kevin Curtis with 27 seconds left that gave the Rams a 20-17 victory. The team the 49ers picked on the most was the Seahawks. While Frank Gore was gouging the three-time division champions for 356 rushing yards in the Niners' two wins, the defense intercepted five passes. In Week 11, Seneca Wallace threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns, but the 49ers also picked off three of his throws in a 20-14 win in San Francisco. And in Week 15, the 49ers held Hasselbeck to 20 of 37 for 220 yards and one score, intercepting two passes in the a 24-14 win in Seattle. As important as the continued development of 6 Sanchez White Jersey
quarterback Alex Smith and dominance of Gore are in 2007, an improved pass defense is paramount if the 49ers are to contend for the division title. Opposing teams cannot continue to complete over 60 percent of their passes, and the 49ers have to cut down on the number of touchdown passes they allow. It all starts within the division. Clements and the other new pass defenders need to help shut down the Seahawks and Rams again. And if the new-look 49ers can figure out how to stop the Cardinals' high-flying attack, it would go a long way toward helping San Francisco pass everyone in the wild, wild West.Keep track of the San Francisco 49ers secondary Take the first step towards a bachelors degree online at UniversityDegreeFinder.com

Tennessee Titans "Haven't given Vince Young much help"

Thanks largely to the heroics of rookie quarterback Vince Young, the Tennessee Titans ended last season by winning six of their final seven games and finishing a surprising 8-8. Young, in 15 games (13 starts), had poor on-paper passing stats -- 51.5 completion percentage, 12 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, 66.7 efficiency rating -- but always seemed to deliver when needed. The 6-foot-5, 228-pounder's ability to make Jack Bauer-like escapes from the pocket and run for big gains (552 yards, seven touchdowns) was also a great aid to Tennessee's offense, and it helped make him one of the most electrifying players in the NFL.Once last year ended and the offseason set in for the Titans, many expected them to improve the talent around Young and become a true contender in the AFC. 4 Brett Favre White jersey
Instead, however, Tennessee has simply let some of Young's key weapons leave and has replaced them with unproven players.Running back was among the Titans' biggest strengths down the stretch of the 2006 campaign. Six-year veteran Travis Henry flashed the ability that made him a Pro Bowler for the Buffalo Bills in 2002, rushing for 1,211 yards on a 4.5 per-carry average. Henry, however, left for Denver, and the Titans elected to not re-sign his backup, Chris Brown, a former 1,000-yard rusher.Sans Henry and Brown, Tennessee is set to rely on two backfield youngsters -- LenDale White and Chris Henry. White, an ex-USC star whom the Titans drafted in Round 2 a year ago, has battled issues with his weight and has turned some off with what has been perceived as a questionable attitude. The 6-1, 235-pound White averaged 4 yards per rush as a rookie, but he was barely tested (61 carries). Henry, on the other hand, had a far less prestigious college career than White. In four seasons at the University of Arizona, the 21-year-old accumulated a meager 269 rushing attempts. The 233-pounder's best year was his last, 2006, but even then he managed a subpar 3.5 yards per carry. Henry had a strong combine, though, where he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and impressed the Titans, who used a second-round pick on him in last month's draft.Aside from losing its two best running backs in the offseason, Tennessee also waved goodbye to its most proven wide receiver, Drew Bennett. By no means was the 6-5, 206-pound Bennett an elite wideout in Nashville, but he was the best the team had for the past three seasons. Now a St. Louis Ram, Bennett led all Titans with 46 catches and 737 yards last year. The team now has to hope a lowly cast that's led by David Givens, who signed an expensive free-agent contract in '06, steps up. Givens finished with just eight catches in five games a season ago, and he's hauled in a total of 166 balls during his five-year career (most of which was spent in New England with future Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady). Tennessee's most notable wideout acquisition this offseason was third-rounder Paul Williams, who starred at Fresno State, but the odds of him making a real difference as an NFL rookie are slim. Not every mid- to late-round first-year WR is Marques Colston, folks. With all of the Titans' offensive losses in mind, it's clear entering the 2007 season that the franchise might be placing too much on Young's shoulders. The former national title-winning Texas QB is only 23, and the Titans have so far been less than eager to provide him the necessary help to take them to the Promised Land.Without talent around Young, one has to wonder whether the team's 8-8 record of last year will be easy to eclipse, particularly in the difficult AFC South. Frankly, for the Titans to take any steps toward a playoff berth this season, Young might have to perform something just shy of6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
a miracle. Over the course of a 16-game schedule, that is one tall order.Got a bone to pick with a newspaper columnist, talk show personality or television analyst? E-mail us at mediawatch . For more information, visit our Media Watch info page.

Tennessee Titans "The game balls go to..."

Wow. Despite a nearly nonexistent passing game and just one offensive touchdown, the Tennessee Titans pulled out the win against the , 13-9, on Sunday The 'W' puts Tennessee at 5-2 and still in the hunt despite playing in the tough AFC South. A flawed victory a bit dependent upon a sorry 14 penalties for 100 43 Polamalu white jersey
yards committed by Oakland it may have been, but a win is nevertheless a win, and to the victors go the spoils. Game balls go to ...Offense. Yes, of course, LenDale White's catching one for his nice 133 yards and the workhorse load he carried Sunday, i.e. an offense dragged down by a lagging passing game. (Seriously, Vince, 6 of 14 for 42 yards? How's that quad doing?)But let's not forget Chris Henry in the kudos, either, as a swell set-up guy at least and a breakaway scorer at best. Off-day for Young or no, Titans fans have to be optimistic for a long and prosperous future behind the Madden cover boy and rookie Henry. In the last two games, he's averaging exactly 7.0 yards per carry - 15 hauls for 105 yards and two TDs.The best offensive sequence in the game? The Titans' third-quarter TD drive, which included the following sequence from about 3:45 remaining: White off right guard for 27 yards; White off left guard for 14 yards; Henry wide left for 24 yards and six points.Between the two of them, it all added up to a nearly 7:5-to-1 ratio of running-to-passing yards for the Titans -- a stunning 192 against just 26 passing.Defense. So many deserve mention in a game that had Daunte Culpepper dealing with more pressure than an underwater arc-welder. Coming to mind first is clearly tackle Albert Haynesworth, who brushed aside offensive guard Robert Gallery all day. Speaking purely empirically, Haynesworth was dangerous throughout. Game ball. When the Raider line was somehow able to hold off Haynesworth on the inside, Antwan Odom came at Culpepper from the outside. Throw one Kyle Vanden Bosch's way, particularly for his early play and his four tackles plus the sack. To go with his two sacks, Travis LaBoy got the key turnover in the early fourth, forcing the fumble from the again-exposed Culpepper. A game ball here, too, despite the unfortunate face-mask penalty which prolonged the Raiders' life in the fourth quarter. And we haven't even talked about tackle leader (with 12) David 43 Polamalu black jersey
Thornton.Special teams. Rob Bironas gets one for his seven-point contribution and the continued corny jokes from the NFL Network guys involving setting the man's name to the old Knack song. A game ball for his suffering.Remembering the Tennessee Titans and the other 31 NFL teams all year-round

New Orleans Saints "Monday night notes: What Raiders must do vs. Saints"

With just six more days to go before the first fruits ofDallas Cowboys jersey
the Tom Cable era are seen, surely many an Oakland Raider enthusiast was paying close attention to the Minnesota Vikings-New Orleans Saints matchup Monday night, as the silver and black anticipates hosting the latter this weekend.Based on the Saints; Monday night performance, the encouraging news for Raiders fans is what appeared to be a scary matchup a few weeks ago now appears to be possibly winnable game. RealFootball365;s game plan for Oakland? Glad you asked! The notes say the advice looks something like the following.; Watch special teams. The opening kickoff run back 56 yards by Pierre Thomas was frightening enough even before Reggie Bush turned the game into his own personal track meet. However, the Saints had already toted an underrated return game, in fact entering the Monday night game tops in the league in yards per punt return. Though punt returning has been a slightly rare event for New Orleans in 2008, with 10 in five games (and just five such Saint opportunities going into the Vikings game), this will be an area of concern what with the way the Raiders are perpetually going three-and-out this season. Maybe this should be put even simpler, to wit. ..; Don;t punt it to Bush at all.; Defend the play-action. This one;s easier said than done, of course, as the Saints may sport the single deadliest tandem on this play with Drew Brees and Bush. Most emblematic of the combo (get to studying this part of the game tape, Cable!) was the call to go for it on fourth-and-1 with just under 5 minutes to play in the second quarter. Bush in the backfield should have made it obvious that the play-action was coming, with Reggie going to the strong side. Maybe it was obvious; no matter. Brees landed the ball in Bush;s hands and he was gone for 15 yards.; Exploit penalties. In their first three games, the Saints were already being penalized more than five times per game. Game No. 4 saw the whistle blown on New Orleans a whopping 13 times; and on Monday night, the Saints; double-figure penalties were certainly their undoing against Minnesota throughout in terms of establishing some kind of momentum. Hopefully the bye week will clean up a few problems within the fairly heavily penalized Raiders (30 calls in five games, tied for 14th best) a bit here, because Oakland;s got to win the battle for the referees. ; Force the turnovers. Going into ;MNF,; New Orleans; turnover differential was zero. Post-Vikings, that number is minus-4 and the loss made for the second thanks in more than part to costly turnovers. As much as you have to dig Bush;s playing style and versatility, he apparently still has some issues vis-a-vis holding on to the ball. And Brees does throw interceptions 4 Brett Favre White jersey
(at least one per game thus far into 2008). Is this a chance for DeAngelo Hall to truly redeem himself? Sure, if he remembers how to play underneath.; Pretty much forget about running off tackle. Adrian Peterson didn;t gain more than 4 yards on a run to the perimeter until the fourth quarter against New Orleans. To be sure, the Saints will be attempting to shut down Darren McFadden in like fashion. Because Justin Fargas returns, why not just have the super-determined cannonball plow through the middle continuously against New Orleans?; Sign Antoine Winfield really, really quickly. What;s that? He;s not available? Well, how about Dave Winfield? Paul Winfield, maybe ...? (16)
